Passport Appointment 2026: How Scheduling Actually Works

Updated July 17, 2026Sources: travel.state.gov · USPS
The short answer: There is no single "passport appointment" system. Post offices book through the USPS online scheduler (usps.com/scheduler). Libraries, courts and clerk offices set their own rules — many take walk-ins. Regional agencies (urgent travel only) book exclusively by phone at 1-877-487-2778. Renewing adults usually need no appointment at all: mail or online.

Half the frustration with passport appointments comes from mixing up three unrelated booking systems. Match your situation to the right one and the process gets dramatically easier.

System 1: USPS post offices — online scheduler

System 2: Libraries, courts and clerk offices — call them

Non-USPS facilities set their own policies: some are appointment-only, many take walk-ins during passport hours, and some run first-come lines. The facility phone number on each of our listings settles it in one call — ask for "passport acceptance hours" specifically.

System 3: Regional agencies — phone only, urgent only

The 27 regional passport agencies serve travelers leaving within 14 days, exclusively through 1-877-487-2778. No online booking exists; anyone selling agency appointments is reselling a free call.

Frequently asked questions

The USPS scheduler shows nothing for weeks. What now?

Widen the radius: slots vary wildly between offices. Then try non-USPS facilities (libraries, clerks) which often have same-week availability — filter our city pages by facility type.

Are passport appointments free?

Yes, at every acceptance facility and agency. You pay only the passport fees themselves. Any site charging for the appointment slot is a middleman.

Can I book for my whole family in one slot?

Policies vary — USPS lets you indicate applicants when booking; small facilities may want one slot per applicant. Confirm by phone for groups.
